Loon Lake – Bouncy Indie Rock

Melbourne band Loon Lake are a five piece made up of the three brothers Sam, Simon, and Nick and two mates Tim and Dan, who make great music all for the fun of it.

The band have made some big inroads in the last 6 months, releasing their debut EP ‘Not Just Friends’, headlining their own tours (supported by The Guppies) and now supporting  San Francisco band Girls.

My favourite of their releases has to be the holiday themed, beach soaked, sunny track ‘In the Summer’. It opens with a catchy step-laddering electric guitar riff which gets instantly grabs you and has you bopping along with every note. Add the drums and bass to the background and you have a really great indie rock n’ roll piece that has been a mainstay in my playlists for the last couple of months.

Their other tracks of their EP are also pretty solid. ‘Into the Office’ has a great bass solo at the start, with a clever guitar loop riding over the bass and drums. ‘Easy Chairs’ is more of the up tempo, bouncy, indie rock that the band are becoming renowned for, whilst Loon Lake show their diversity in the slower more mellow track ‘I Loved You Then’.

Loon Lake have also released the killer single ‘Bad to Me‘, which shows some maturity in the improved layering of their tracks, and a big step forward in terms of their lyrics. ‘Bad to Me’  keeps the guitar riffs flowing, but slows the tempo slightly in what is a more serious/emotional song than their others, and although not as bouncy as previous songs, the track is still catchy and gets the fingers tapping.

Having caught Loon Lake several weeks ago when playing a free gig at the Beach Road Hotel Bondi (they always have great free gigs), I also know they put on an awesome live show. All five of them are clearly stoked with their success and popularity and it shows on stage, with a fun, energetic show.

The thing that I like about Loon Lake is the way they weave catchy guitar riffs into the music, and just make fun, bouncy indie rock. I can’t wait for some more releases and the chance to catch their awesome live show again.
