Q and As with Olympic Ayres

First up, who makes up who are the guys behind Olympic Ayres?

Olympic Ayres is the studio project of Kamaliza and mmiiddii. When we play live we like to bring our friends along so we expand into a larger set-up.

How did Olympic Ayres form? What was your initial philosophy and intentions towards your music?

After meeting at a party in 2006 followed by a few conversations in the seedy suburbs of Sydney we decided to start making music and in 2010 we wrote some songs … this turned out to be “Episode I” and was released in January 2011.

Why Olympic Ayres? Did you guys get caught up in the fever of Beijing and London or is there a deeper reason behind the name?

Olympic Air is a greek airline company and we liked the name. To avoid any lawsuits we decided to change the spelling of Air to Ayres

Say somebody stumbles across you guys playing a set. How are they going to describe your sound to their mates. What other comments might they make?

Basically we try make dance music with instruments … this tends to cover a few different genres but we’ll leave it up to you to decide

What are your biggest musical influences? Do you guys mainly draw on other electronic artists for inspiration or does it come from a wider range of genres?

The inspirations are limitless … we love so many different musical endeavours so it would be hard for us to pin point anything in particular … our favourite producers range from Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and Kanye West to Philippe Zdar, James Murphy and Diplo

When you guys are composing new tunes, do you have a particular method? Do you lay down a beat, or get jiggy with the lyrics first?

A song can come from anywhere … lately songs have been starting with a beat and we tend to build on that. We tend to start ideas at home and send it to each other via email for the other person to have a crack at adding something to the song

‘The View’ and ‘Daylight’ have both been given spins on Triple J this year, what was it like to hear your music on the radio for the first time.

It’s a great feeling, we never know how people are going to react to our music (particularly “Episode I” because we never showed anyone the songs before we released them) But to hear your songs being played on the radio and blogged is like getting a nice pat on the back and the confidence booster you sometimes need to keep working on new songs and keep creating

2012 has been a pretty sweet year for you guys and it’s not over yet. You guys have released a new EP ‘Episode II’ several months back, and have just dropped an re-packaged ‘Episode II with remixes’. What made you do the re-release, and how did you pick the DJs to do the remixing?

Before we even made a song together we were DJing (together and separately) at clubs and parties, so obviously our love for the remix came from there. We knew from the start we wanted to get other artists to remix our works because we love to see other peoples perceptions on our music and see where they can take it. The choice was obvious in getting Purple Sneakers DJs, SAFIA and Moonbase Commander on board because they are all legends and are great at what they do

You guys have also been announced as Unearthed winners to play at Field Day alongside the likes of Mark Ronson and Two Door Cinema Club. What was it like to win, and has the excitement worn off yet?

It was a big shock, which sometimes I still find hard to believe … getting given an opportunity like this is very important at this stage in our musical lives and we want to do something special for it so we’re getting a 5 piece together (our biggest live band yet) and hopefully bringing some good vibes to our set as well

2013 Looms. What are plans for Olympic Ayres, world domination, solidifying their presence on the Aussie music scene or somewhere in between?

HA! We hope somewhere in between … We are preparing for the release of “Episode III” at the start of 2013 so you can expect a new single from us end of January/early February. Expanding our live show with new members and also getting interstate is on our to do list for 2013
