Bears with Guns have given us a taste of their second EP with the new tune ‘Wandering Soldier‘.
Bears with Guns have a fantastic jazzy pop vibe that just emanates through in ‘Wandering Soldier’. There is something about the way the bouncy yet soulful number, that just burns so sweetly. They have a distinct vibe that reminds me a little of Hungry Kids of Hungary, albeit slightly more mellow. The film clip is also worth a look, filmed live in around Sydney, fellow locals will enjoy the homely feel. Overall, ‘Wandering Soldier’ is jazzy mellow pop music at its best, so get excited for their second EP titled ‘Only The Quick and The Hungry’ which drops later this year.
Following on from last single Battleships, is the new track from Bernard Fanning, ‘Tell Me How It Ends’.
I guess it is inevitable that having fronted Powderfinger for so long, there is going to be a number of those vibes passed on to his solo project. And as much as I hate a cliche, I cannot help but think this belongs straight on Vulture Street tucked in there behind ‘On My Mind’. Given the success of that particular upbeat album, it isn’t such a bad thing. Aside, I love the electric guitars in this track, they are pretty rad and definitely pump the song up a little into that actual rock category, with none of the soft rock labels that have been hovering around Bernard Fanning’s recent work. Slightly nostalgic, but equally rocky, Bernard has delivered the goods with this one.
Brisbane indie dance duo Yale have released a pretty cool new tune called ‘No One Else Knows‘.
Having done the rounds on the local circuit, received plenty of airplay and released several top notch tracks, its only a matter of time til Yale take Australia fully by storm. The good news is that ‘No One Else Knows’ could well help them do that, being the best electro-funk tune that I have heard recently. Sounding a little Daft-Punkish in beats, the distinct funk style to ‘No One Else Knows’ makes it simply irresistible on almost anybody’s ears, and is bound to have you cutting in a groove down the hallway each time it comes on. Epic stuff from a highly touted Brisbane duo.
Brisbane’s favourite indie poppers Cub Scouts are back with another super catchy number called ‘Paradise‘.
At the opening few bars I could have sworn that ‘Paradise’ belonged more to the likes of Panama or Mitzi with its distinct indie dance vibe. However, once the high end vocals of Tim Nelson kick in its hard not to deny its a Cub Scouts tune, with his sweet voice setting the pace for an equally relaxing and groovy pop number. I must admit I like the slightly dancier feel compared to their earlier tracks, and think it could reach to those outside the Triple J/indie realm. If it’s not already obvious, I am a huge fan of ‘Paradise’ and sense that their new 5 song ‘Paradise EP’ due for release on August 2nd will be ever better than their debut!
Little May are based out of Sydney and have released a delicsouly cute indie folk tune called ‘Boardwalks‘.
‘Boardwalks’ is a piece of super mellow indie folk music. It has everything you want in a chill out tune, with super sweet and soft vocals, a delectable banjo loop and this whole ultra smooth, slightly upbeat marching climax to the song. Its hard not to enjoy, and given its available for free download, is sure to keep you warm this winter.
Sarah Blasko is teaming up with eBay in support of charity organisation Bowel Cancer Australia – a cause so incredibly close to Sarah’s heart.
“I lost my mother Ellie to bowel cancer 13 years ago and it’s taken me a while to find my voice to speak about it,” Sarah says. “Recently, a close friend also lost her mother to the same disease and it was incredibly sad. I feel that there’s not as much awareness out there about this particular form of cancer, so obviously the more information out there the better.”
Up for grabs is a double pass to the sold out Splendour in the Grass festival to watch Sarah perform from side of stage, as well as a selection of clothing, homewares, vinyl, books and bric-a-brac personally chosen or donated by Sarah.
