Believe it or not, The Dead Leaves initially began as a solo project with the band getting together to help produce music for the bands vocalist, Joe Gow but quickly evolved into a group project with the The Dead Leaves first album, Cities on the Sea, being due for release February10. Until then the band have released the single ‘If the Shoe Fits’ to get us started.
The band is quite rightly built around Joe Gow’s deep , husky, baritone vocals, which are absolutely amazing, and sound very similar to Matt Berninger of the National. It is one of those voices that just commands respect, and you associate with those good looking people who wear suits, drink scotch, eat caviar and drive Maserati’s – several which appear in the ‘If the Shoe Fits’ music video below.I mean no disrespect to the other musicians in the band, guitarist Andrew Pollock, drummer Joel Witenberg and bassist Cam Grindrod, whose music is also first class, its just that I find the vocals so incredible. In fact the supporting music should be given more credit with the washy guitars and soft drumming providing the perfect platform to allow Gow’s vocals to sound as good as they do.
Although slightly criticised for their similarities to The National, The Dead Leaves still deliver a great sound and are not some made in China cheap knock off. And as The National only tour every 3 to 4 years, I am quite happy to go to my local music venue and catch these guys for a fifth of the price. Hopefully their forthcoming album will show enough diversity to cement their own identity.
After releasing two cool singles earlier this year, Sydney band Winters End have also announced a couple of dates for what is kind of a mini-tour. Armed with some tight drumming, beautiful piano melodies and the strong vocals of Marissa Pinto, be sure to catch these guys live as they put on quite the show.
Winters End will play The Brunswick Hotel in Melbourne this Friday, June 15th before returning to play the UTS Glasshouse in Sydney on June 21st, in what are promising to be exciting shows.
If your having a causal workday with not much happening, why not brighten it up by spending 20 minutes listening to the new EP by Mosman Alder called ‘Burn Bright’.
The EP which features the popular single ‘Raisin Heart’ is a relaxing listen, which considering what a meticulously crafted piece of work it is is kind of ironic. The five track EP has a lot going on in it, but maintains this melancholy beat which is almost perfect to work to as it just keeps plodding along.
‘Raisin Heart’ has rightly been the most popular track off the EP, and in many ways sounds like The National collaborated with Dappled Cities. Both Matt Berninger (The National) and Mosman Alder’sValdis Valodze have these deep commanding baritone voices which dominate each song, whilst the keyboard work and hazy back up vocals just screams Dappled Cities. As a big fan of both The National and Dappled Cities, I love Mosman Alder. I particularly like the build up to the final chorus in ‘Raisin Heart’ and the backing harmonies, its a really cool song.
The other news is that Mosman Alder are touring to support their new EP, and will be playing three dates. Be sure to catch them live in what are sure to be very intimate performances.
The Belligerents’ new EP ‘She Calls The Shots’ is officially released on June 22nd and to Celebrate the guys have announced a hnadful of shows down the East Coast and R-Adelaide to show off their new tunes.
After an awesome first EP ‘Less Arty More Party’ and supporting a host of international acts including Neon Indian, Metronomy and Breakbot, I am expecting some big things from this coming album. Word on the inside is that we’re not going to be disappointed with the album apparently “capturing their dynamic and energetic live set perfectly”. We get our first taste of what to expect in the next week or so, with a new single and video clip. Get excited people!

Parachute Youth are a duo from Melbourne who have released the hit track ‘Can’t Get Better Than This’ off their EP of the same name, which I think is coming pretty close to being Australia’s dance anthem for 2012.
It has everything you want in a killer dance track. A mad heavy baseline, catchy vocal hook, and has that vibe that doesn’t just makes you want to dance, but forces you to. Everybody knows it, everybody has heard it, and if you haven’t seen it the videoclip for their hit track ‘Can’t Get Better Than This’, it’s also pretty sweet.
The great news for us is that Parachute Youth are also touring at the moment, in fact they are half way through a massive tour that has seen them go all over the country. But alas, the guys are still to play a host of shows in Canberra (tonight), Adelaide (June 15th), Hobart (June 16th), Melbourne (June 23rd), Newcastle (June 29th), before ending up at Mackay’s River Sessions festival on June 30th. So be sure to check out the details here, and catch the duo live, in what is sure to be a awesome gig.
Brisbane indie rock outfit Millions have signed with record company Stop Start Music and are releasing their EP ‘Nine Lives, Six Degrees’ on June 22nd.
The EP will feature the already released singles in ‘Guru’, ‘Those Girls, and ‘Slow Burner’ as well as two new tracks ‘Champagne’ and ‘Going Overseas’. The new tracks may be appropriately named with the band sure to head overseas given the success they’ve had in Australia in 2012.
Whilst we have to wait to hear the new tracks, we don’t have to wait to know when they will be touring, with Millions announcing a handful of dates in support of their EP. They have also announced they will be supported by Sydney based Step-Panther who you may know from their track ‘Fight like a Knight’ which was featured on Triple J.
